Top Bakeries in North and East London for Sweets & Coffee

It’s been a while since my last post about bakeries or coffee, but that doesn’t mean I’ve stopped enjoying them. Quite the opposite! I have a bit of a weekend ritual with my partner, we skip lunch and treat ourselves to a mid-afternoon pastry and coffee. But finding a place that truly hits the sweet spot, serving both tasty bakes and proper coffee, is always a challenge. And when you're looking for that perfect weekend treat, you don’t want to settle for something just okay, do you?

If you need recommendations for the weekend, below you can find my go-to bakeries, perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth or picking up some great bread too.

I’m currently obsessed with this place because it ticks all the boxes, from its inspiring journey to its outstanding pastries and warm service. What started as a lockdown project has quickly become a North London favourite, and for good reason. The powerhouse behind it, Sophia, has taken the bakery scene to another level, creating something truly special.

Step into one of their locations, and you’ll be greeted by friendly staff and an incredible selection of pastries, sourdough breads, and other treats (plus excellent coffee). And with branches in Essex Road, Crouch End, and a new one opening in Highgate, Sourdough Sophia is only becoming more accessible.

Must try: The lemon bowtie!

Best known for their pastries, Pophams has been winning over Londoners for more than seven years. But they don’t stop at just pastries as they also have an Italian-inspired restaurant in their London Fields location, a private studio for events, and a pantry where you can stock up on artisanal goodies.

Their shops are always buzzing, a proof to the fact that their offering still hits all the right notes. With three locations, getting your hands on one of their famous croissants is easier than ever.

Must try: Pain au chocolat

Another bakery born out of the pandemic, Buns From Home started as a kitchen experiment. The founder set out to create the ultimate croissant-based cinnamon bun from his mother's kitchen.

It didn’t take long for food critics, the media, and investors to catch on, and now Londoners are spoiled for choice when it comes to finding the best buns in town.

And judging by their rapid expansion, 21 locations and counting, he succeeded.

Must-try: Dulce de leche

The owner, originally from the south of France, brings a taste of home to North London. A relative newcomer, Pierre recently opened a second branch in Holloway, and it’s already making noise. This is not just another bakery, it’s a true boulangerie, serving up fantastic bread and classic viennoiseries.

Disclaimer: I haven’t been yet, but everything about this place looks amazing!

A favourite among Londoners, Dusty Knuckle is more than just a bakery. By day, it’s a bakery and café; by night, it transforms into a pizza and wine spot.

The hip Dalston location is my favourite, especially in the summer, when the lively outdoor seating makes for a perfect hangout.

But for me, it’s all about their bread. Their potato sourdough is hands-down the best in London, striking the perfect balance between fluffiness, crunch, and sourness.

They also have a van in Highbury & Islington, which is great for a quick bite after a walk with my dog or a tennis match.

Must try: Potato sourdough

These are just a few of my favourite spots, but I’d love to hear yours! Have you tried any of these bakeries, or do you have a hidden gem I should check out? Share the love!
