The Best Pubs in East and North London for festive pints

Earl of Essex

Winter Wonderland, Christmas markets, Christmas masses in central London? No, thank you. You know me, especially at this time of year, I much prefer spending time at the beating heart of London: the pubs. I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s worth saying again, there’s nothing better than a cosy pub during the festive season. These are perfect places to spend an afternoon, sipping on pints and sharing a smile with fellow pub-goers and locals. Sure, it might get a little elbow-to-elbow, but I’d much rather be among happy pub crowds than squeezing through busy shopping areas. Why some people enjoy that madness is beyond me. Crazy, right?

Even with the occasional crowd or large groups, the pubs come alive with warm fireplaces, festive decorations, and the cheerful atmosphere of holiday conversations. Imagine stepping in from the current grim weather and being greeted by the comforting scent of a pub, with a hint of mulled wine in the air and the lively hum of chatter. It’s a simple pleasure that never gets old, does it?

In this post, I’m sharing some of the best pubs in East and North London for those spontaneous festive gatherings. These are great spots where you can enjoy the season without the crowds of tourists or office Christmas parties. Allow yourself to gluttony and enjoy festive drinks and beers that are only best drank at this time of the year.

If you’re like me, then trade the madness of Christmas shopping for the warm comfort of a pub. Whether you’re after a quiet pint by the fire or a lively celebration with friends, these East and North London spots promise a great visit. Cheers 🍻🎄

The Army and Navy | Newington Green

“Sadly,” this neighbourhood pub was listed as the best local boozer by Time Out last month, a distinction that will hopefully not disrupt its laid-back atmosphere or draw unwanted crowds. I’ve been going there since I moved to Newington Green four years ago, and it’s just across the road from where I live. Over time, I’ve seen it grow from a modest spot into a go-to place for locals, especially for watching sports. It now has a great covered terrace and a lively atmosphere but has thankfully kept its charm and authenticity, even after appearing in shows like Baby Reindeer and getting that Time Out nod.

I love how traditional and straightforward it feels, no frills, just a proper local boozer. Located on Matthias Road, which connects Newington Green to the bustling Dalston area, The Army and Navy feels like a proper gem. With its old-school vibe and just the right touch of Christmas cheer, it’s the kind of place that feels warm and welcoming all year round.

The Lion and Unicorn | Kentish Town

This has been one of my favourite pubs in London since I started coming here in 2016. Beyond their delicious roasts, The Lion and Unicorn truly shines in December, transforming into a cosy winter wonderland for adults. As soon as you step inside, you’re wrapped up in the festive spirit but in a warm and welcoming way. The air carries that special scent of Christmas ales from their seasonal menu, adding to the charm. And their beer garden, equipped with heaters, is perfect for anyone who prefers to stay outdoors while keeping cosy - you can’t go wrong!

I've only been to this local gem a handful of times, with 2011 being the first, but each visit has been memorable. For those who love tradition, the Southampton Arms is a must. This no-frills pub specialises in craft ales and ciders, with a rustic charm that feels almost frozen in time. During the holidays, it becomes a cosy haven and if I’m not mistaken, from 6pm they (hopefully) serve a limited number of their famous meaty sandwiches, which are an absolute treat. Almost hidden in plain sight, this pub is an unsung hero for those looking for a proper cosy experience.

The Alma | Canonbury

The Alma is what I’d call my neighbourhood pub, a place that guarantees a good time any night of the week. With classic film posters, vintage gaming-inspired decor, and quirky themed touches, it’s a treat for pop culture fans. During the festive season, the pub steps it up with curated holiday playlists and occasional themed events that draw an eclectic crowd.

What makes this pub special is its unique vibe. Whether it’s the folklore music nights, upbeat pop classics on Fridays, or laid-back Sunday drinks, it’s the perfect spot for anyone looking for a festive pub experience with tons of character in North London.

The Kenton Arms | Hackney

The Kenton Arms is a proper hidden gem with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, making it a great choice for a festive drink. With its unique holiday decorations, the pub has a nice mix of charm and character. They specialise in offering a solid selection of beers, and the cosy interior is perfect for escaping the chilly London weather. Whether you're after a quiet evening or a more lively gathering, The Kenton Arms won’t disappoint.

The Earl of Essex is one of those pubs I just can’t get enough of. I’ve been going there for years, whether it’s for Fish and Chips on Fridays, drinks on Saturdays, or their delicious roasts on Sundays, it never disappoints. With its great local vibe, it’s hard to beat. The pub offers one of the best beer selections in the area, making it a perfect spot for those looking to try something different. Plus, the staff are always cheerful and make every visitor feel welcome.

Crooked Billet | Clapton

The Crooked Billet is a popular spot for North/East Londoners. At this time of year, the pub really gives off a cosy vibe with its warm fire and seasonal menu featuring mulled drinks, ales, and classic pub food - it’s hard to beat. Whether you're meeting friends or in a larger group, it’s a great place to hang out.
